Major historical and cultural relic under state protection. This castle is located in Huxi Township of She ethnic community, Zhangpu County. It is built by the royal descendants of emperors of Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). The arrangement of Zhaojiabao’s central part and Wanbi Lou imitates Kaifeng prefecture, the old capital city of Northern Song Dynasty. In 1619 AD, the royal descendants expanded the castle according to the style of both Northern and Southern Song Dynasty’s capital cities and finally finished the construction of it. Zhaojiabao Castle is basically square, about 90000 square meters in area, and has a 1082m perimeter. The name of its center building—Wanbi Lou implies that these royal descendants hoped one day they would resume their motherland as to recover lost treasures in perfect condition. Its main building sits facing the north in the middle of the castle, consists of four buildings of the same style of 5 rows indepth. There are two lotus ponds in front of the main building. To the west of the inner pond there is Bianpai Bridge. Having been the dwelling place for royal descendants of an ancient empire for hundreds of years, Zhaojiabao is rich with abundant precious relics and historical records. It provides us more information about the history of one dynasty and its sovereigns. Nowadays, Zhaojiabao is regarded by experts and scholars as “National Treasure”. Its name has been recorded in The Dictionary of Chinese Tourism Sites.
